The Book That Changed My Life: The Four Agreements

Some books come into your life and quietly shift the way you see everything. For me, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz was one of those books. It’s simple, practical, and yet profoundly powerful. A guide for living with more freedom, joy, and self-respect.

Here’s why it resonated so deeply with me, and how the Four Agreements can change the way you live too:

1️⃣ Be Impeccable with Your Word
Your words carry energy. They create your reality and shape your relationships. Being impeccable means speaking with integrity, saying what you mean, and avoiding words that harm yourself or others. This agreement taught me to choose my words carefully, to speak truthfully, and to notice the power of what I say, especially to myself.

2️⃣ Don’t Take Anything Personally
This one was a game-changer. When we take things personally, we give away our power and let others’ opinions dictate our self-worth. Ruiz reminds us that what others say and do is a reflection of them, not of us. Learning to step back and not take things personally has given me peace and more confidence in every area of life.

3️⃣ Don’t Make Assumptions
So much unnecessary stress and misunderstanding come from assumptions. Ruiz encourages us to ask questions, clarify, and communicate openly instead of filling in the blanks with fear or doubt. This agreement has helped me avoid drama, strengthen my relationships, and approach life with curiosity instead of judgment.

4️⃣ Always Do Your Best
Doing your best isn’t about perfection, it’s about effort and presence in each moment. Your best will vary depending on circumstances, but consistently showing up fully allows growth, self-respect, and fulfilment. This agreement taught me to release self-criticism and embrace progress over perfection.
